Warning from top councillor over future challenges to South Holland’s successful recycling rates

A warning has been issued that South Holland faces challenges in order to maintain its successful drive towards more waste recycling.

The district has seen a marked increased in tonnage collected this year, partly due to the start of the Green Bag Lottery, a recycling rewards scheme.
During its first six months, waste recycled rose by 16 per cent from 585 tonnes to 678 tonnes.
But changes are on the way and Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, the district council’s portfolio holder for waste management, has hit out at Lincolnshire County Council for “grabbing” the materials revenue which the district council currently receives.

In 2012 South Holland District Council successfully bid for £1.7m funding from the Government’s Weekly Collections Support Scheme, covering three years.

In his latest blog. Coun Gambba-Jones said: “Just some of the emerging issues for us will be the end of the external funding pot we succeeded in gaining a couple of years ago.
“Added to this, Lincolnshire County Council, in their wisdom and for no other reason than to save money for themselves and grab the available materials revenue, are in the process of taking control of our recycling.
“We will have to continue to collect the recycling, but the council will not receive any recycling credits from the county council, with the county also receiving the £10 a ton we currently get.”
