Warm welcome for Queen Victoria in Spalding

Members of the Spalding U3A group had a blast from the past at their recent meeting when Queen Victoria gave a talk.

Her Royal Highness Victoria – aka guest speaker Eve Bacon – arrived in full regal finery for the event.

She delivered a speech about her nine children (“although not always warmly,” a spokesman added).

There was much entertainment whilst members learnt how to curtsey – not so difficult if you have short legs but holding the position without wobbling was more problematic, a spokesman said.

The group was even given a practical demonstration of how to take one’s afternoon tea.

Once members had enjoyed a typical cream tea with scone, clotted cream and jam on proper china plates, the history group arranged a display of information and photographs about Victorian Spalding in keeping with the theme of the meeting.

“It was altogether an enjoyable and informative afternoon,” said a spokesman.

The U3A is open to anyone retired or semi-retired: monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at Surfleet Village Hall.
