Warm tributes are paid to charitable Holbeach resident Les

Tributes have been paid to a Holbeach resident thought to have raised around £40,000 for local charities.

Les Ward held regular events in the town, especially bingo and 40s nights at the WI Hall, as well as having a table top sale.

The 77-year-old particularly enjoyed raising funds for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance alongside best friend Brenda Twigg.

Brenda, who met him 23 years ago after Les helped lifting potatoes while working at Barry’s chip shop, believes around £20,000 was raised for the air ambulance, through numerous events over the years, though Les didn’t keep a running total.

“He used to say how good a charity it was.”

Les was born in Holbeach and worked as a builder’s labourer for most of his life.

He loved music and played the bass drum in Holbeach Town Band.

“He was a man who would always do anything for anybody,” Brenda continued. “He was a very happy person and cheerful most of the time.

“He’ll be sadly missed.”
