Veterans remember the fallen at Donington service

A parade and remembrance service gave Donington the chance to honour those who gave their lives for their country.

Veterans paraded through the village in beautiful autumn sunshine, accompanied by a bagpiper, before laying wreaths at the village’s Arnhem Oak Tree.
They then attended a service at St Mary and the Holy Rood Church, which has an Arnhem memorial in remembrance of the 1st Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers who served throughout Europe during World War II, including the battle of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden.
In a very moving service all the names of the fallen comrades were read out by Arnhem veteran Tom Hicks and the airborne prayer was read out.
The bugler then played the Last Post, which was followed by a two minute silence and the Reveille.
A piper played the Squadron Lament and the service ended with the National Anthem and Land of Hope and Glory.
Afterwards refreshments were served in the church hall and veterans exchanged stories with each other and local residents.
