Vase joy masks league anguish

Early league misery was forgotten as Holbeach United cashed in with victory in the FA Vase on Saturday.

After going down 5-0 at Whittlesey Athletic in midweek after a 7-1 defeat at Dussindale & Hellesdon four days earlier, the Tigers bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Kirby Muxloe in the first qualifying round of  the national knockout competition.

That earned them at least £775 in prize money and a tie at Sandiacre Town on September 20, when they could boost that to more than £1,500.

Josh Williams lobbed the home opener from the edge of the box to put the hosts ahead but the Midland League side levelled before half time.

It took a last-gasp scintillating strike from a similar distance to the opening goal by substitute Marley Hamilton to earn progress for a team showing six changes to the midweek defeat.

That Thurlow Nunn Division One North match at Whittlesey had seen the hosts go two up in the first half, with three more goals coming after the break.
