Unemployment in South Holland continues to fall

There were over 400 fewer people unemployed in South Holland last month that a year ago.

The jobless figure for the district in November showed another 1.4 per cent drop on the previous month – a fall of 2.2 per cent on November 2013.

It means 58 people found a job, or stopped claiming unemployment benefits, in November.

Latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics show the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance across Lincolnshire in November was 8,509 – 60 less than in October and 3,434 less than 12 months ago.

Youth unemployment also fell from October to November, with 110 fewer 16-24-year-olds now claiming JSA.

It means there are now 2,430 people in that age group claiming the benefit, a drop of four per cent which mirrors the national picture.

However, the 16-24 age group make up 29 per cent of all the county’s claimaints, compared to 23 per cent nationally.

The Lincolnshire Research Observatory report into the figures for November said: “It is an unusual trend to see the claimant count decrease between the months of October to November.

“This is the first time a decrease has been seen for this period since 2007.”

The number of working-age people claiming job seekers allowance long-term for over six months in Lincolnshire decreased by 170 people from September to October.

There are currently 3,760 people who are long term unemployed in Lincolnshire, 1,695 fewer than October 2013.

In Lincolnshire, the long term unemployed now form 44 per cent of all claimants, a decrease of approximately two per cent on October 2013, indicating that long-term unemployment in the county has fallen in line with national unemployment rates.
