Tulips smash Star for seven, Stamford edge out Tigers, Sutton and Crowland beaten

Spalding United were South Holland’s big winners on Saturday as they romped to a 7-0 friendly win at Peterborough Northern Star.

On the final weekend of pre-season action, the Tulips had goals from Andrew Wright (17), Paul Walker (pen 45), Sam Downey (55 and 60), Tom Waumsley (70 and 73) and Nathan Whitehead (86) to thank for their success.

Holbeach United, meanwhile, slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against Graham Drury’s Stamford.

Tommy Treacher first the Tigers ahead in the first half at Carter’s Park, before a second-half brace from the Daniels – including a late winner from former Tiger Sam Mulready – turned things around for the visitors.

Holbeach and Spalding meet at Carter’s Park on Tuesday night as the pair conclude their pre-season campaigns (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, both Crowland Town and Long Sutton Athletic suffered heavy defeats in their ChromaSport PDFL openers, with both sides participating in the annual groundhop.

Crowland were thrashed 7-2 by AFC Stanground at Snowden Field in the Premier Division on Saturday morning, while Sutton were handed a 5-2 Division One reverse at Wittering on Sunday afternoon.

Pinchbeck United, who begin their PDFL Premier Division campaign next weekend, won 1-0 at Spilsby Town in their final friendly on Saturday.

Tony Edwards netted a late winner for Ian Dunn’s side, who finish pre-season with seven wins and one draw from eight games, with 20 goals scored and only four conceded.
