Tulip Talk with Jan Whitbourn

Tulip Radio is pleased to announce the return of South Holland’s much loved Tulip Queen competition.

After a gap of two years since the final Flower Queen, Inca Honnor, was selected as ambassador for the area, many organisations have asked Tulip Radio who they might ask to open their galas, new premises and so on.

Tulip Radio’s Jan Whitbourn was involved with the organisation of the Flower Queen competition for several years and thought it would be a good idea to help to continue this Spalding tradition.

Jan has already secured some prizes for the winner, thanks to the generosity of local businesses Loaded, Hills Department Store and Fancy Frox.

This year’s winner will be known as the Tulip Radio Tulip Queen and will be chosen by a panel of judges on the afternoon of the Christmas Light Switch-on on Friday, November 28.

The panel of judges will select the winner in Hall Place before the switch on. They will be selected from a shortlist and the public are invited to show their support.

The winner’s first task will be to switch on the town’s Christmas lights and as soon as she is chosen she will be whisked off to Fancy Frox to choose a beautiful dress and then on to Hills Department Store for a makeover in preparation for the big event less than an hour later!

Hills Department Store are also giving a ‘day dress’ for the winner.

Gavin Allmand, of Hills Department Store, said: “We think it’s wonderful that Spalding once again has such an ambassador for the town. Christmas is a wonderful time and to introduce the Tulip Queen to participate in the Christmas lights switch-on adds further to the event in our town centre.”

Loaded Night Club will play host to Tulip Radio’s semi final heats, where the contestants are whittled down ready for final judging.

Loaded manager Dave Charlesworth said: “The ambassadorial role has in essence been present in Spalding for decades and it would be a tragic shame to lose the “Queen” as well as the Flower Parade.

“I applaud the staff at Tulip Radio for wanting to keep a tradition alive; and, along with the team at Loaded, am only too happy to assist in any way possible.”

Loaded Night Club, AlleyCatz Bowling and Bounce Bar are adding to the prize pool with a VIP experience for the winner worth over £250, and runner up prizes of over £500.

Karen Povey, of Fancy Frox said: “We at Fancy Frox are going to have about an hour to select, fit and dress the newly appointed Tulip Queen on the day and are looking forward to this challenge, but the winner can be assured she will look amazing in her beautiful dress.”

Entry forms for the competition are available from Tulip Radio or Loaded Night Club. Entrants must be over 18.
