Train line between Spalding and Peterborough closed as freight train wagon blown off tracks in high winds

The train line between Spalding and Peterborough had to be closed on Tuesday after a freight train wagon was blown off the tracks.

Network Rail had warned that damage to a lineside telecomms cabinet could affect train service between the two stations on Wednesday, but the issue was resolved overnight.

The incident near Deeping St Nicholas happened in high winds at about 3.40pm.

Fire and rescue crews from Spalding, Crowland, Market Deeping and Bourne attended, and later left the incident in Network Rail’s hands.

East Midlands Trains said at about 5pm: “The wagon has damaged some lineside safety equipment and the line must remain closed while this is repaired; this means that trains will be suspended for the rest of the day.”

At around 9pm, East Midlands Trains reported that Network Rail teams were at the scene trying to work out a way to get the freight train off the line.

A replacement bus service was set up between Spalding and Peterborough stations.
