Defensive lynchpin and UCL Premier Division-winning captain Jamie Stevens has left Spalding United.

The centre-back, who also skippered Holbeach United to UCL glory in 2013, has rejected fresh terms from the Tulips and is now deemed a free agent.

Spalding supremo Pat Rayment told The Spalding and South Holland Voice that he believes Stevens has been offered more money elsewhere.

He said: “Jamie Stevens has left the club with immediate effect. He has rejected our terms and it’s fair to say I’m very disappointed.

“He was a huge part of our success  – and will be a big player for whoever he decides to join next. Holbeach certainly wouldn’t have won the league without him the other year.

“I think it’s a purely financial thing. We offered him a good deal, but somebody else has obviously put more money on the table.

“He’s now a free agent and can do whatever he likes.”

Stevens was one of the stand-out players in Spalding’s title-winning season. He joins Jonny Allen, Adam Jackson, Dan Cotton, Josh Ford and Ross Watson in leaving the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field ahead of next season’s campaign in step four of the non-league ladder.
