This Sunday will see the Formula One (F1) season reach a dramatic climax.
Many people don’t know this, but I am a huge F1 fan and have followed this season’s racing very closely.
With the dominant Mercedes team having already wrapped up the Constructors’ Championship, the only thing that needs deciding now is the World Drivers’ Championship.
The two that are gunning for the title are currently team mates and both drive for the already crowned Mercedes team. The season’s finale all hinges on the last grand prix, which is being held at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi this weekend.
I, for one, am hoping that Great Britain’s Lewis Hamilton will come out on top against fellow rival and team-mate Nico Rosberg.
The season has seen so many ups and downs for Hamilton ever since the first race in Australia back in March, but going into the championship showdown the 2008 champion holds a 17 point lead.
With 25 points awarded for a win, 18 for second place and 15 for third place, you would think that only a catastrophe would stop Hamilton from being crowned champion for a second time.
However with new rules brought in this season, the last race in Abu Dhabi has been made a double point’s situation.
Winning this race will give you a massive 50 points and coming second just 36 points, with 30 awarded for third.
For Hamilton to win the title – which I believe he has thoroughly deserved having won ten of the races compared to Rosberg’s five – he would either need to win the race or make sure he comes second if it’s Rosberg who takes the race win.
Let’s hope we get a grandstand race and a mechanical failure doesn’t come into play and affect the outcome.
With the Mercedes team having been the best on the grid and giving Hamilton and Rosberg the best car to compete in over the season, it is no surprise that it comes down to these two.
With both team-mates competing for the 2014 driver’s title, it must be a very hard situation to be in and to deal with throughout the season.
On one hand you have to work together and put the team first in securing the Constructors Championship.
But on the other, you know every point counts and you need to outperform your team-mate and come first to give you the best chance of becoming world champion.
It came to no one’s surprise that, with these pressures, a collision course was inevitable and that’s exactly what happened back at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Rosberg and Hamilton collided in an incident which saw Hamilton suffer a puncture and Rosberg go on to win the race.
After that incident in August, Rosberg led the drivers’ championship by 29 points – which represented the highest lead throughout the season. Fast forward three months and, like stated before, Hamilton has amazingly come back and turned that deficit around to lead by 17.
Driving at those speeds and under that pressure is truly stunning. But what impresses me most is the mental strength and the composure they show when travelling that quickly.
Formula One is not a sport without considerable risks and these guys show amazing talent every weekend to compete at the highest level.
For now, though, I hope to tune in this Sunday and see Hamilton be crowned 2014 World Drivers’ Champion.
