I’d like to offer my congratulations to Harry Sharman and Spalding Rugby Club, who gained promotion by beating Newbold on Avon this past Saturday to gain promotion back to Midlands One East.
So within two weeks there have been celebrations of promotion in two different sports for the same town.
I think you will agree with me that sports fans in South Holland are being spoilt for entertainment.
Without knowing many of the Spalding Rugby Club players personally, I have a lot of respect for what they do.
Every game they put their body on the line and go to war in search of victory and as you have read, they are reaping the rewards and will test themselves even more in the coming season.
Another fantastic benefit of the club’s progression is the inspiration they will pass on to many of the budding youngsters in their talented youth set up.
Working in school sports, I speak to many parents and children weekly – and the words they have for the set up there is nothing but praise.
The work that people such as Kev Arnold, Shaun Gibbons, Jon Holland, Paul Wilks, Paul Pearson, Kev Wand and many more do usually goes unseen and unheard of.
However, these people deserve massive credit for the amount of volunteer work they put in in their quest to help our youngsters achieve their dreams.
So if you have a little enthusiasm for rugby, my advice would be to get in touch with Spalding Rugby Club as they’re only going in one direction – and that’s forward.
The season of 2014/15 should be a cracker as both Spalding RFC and Spalding United will be looking to push on from this season’s success.
For now, after the celebrations have died down from both sides of Spalding, the players can look back at a job well done and look forward to the coming season after a well-deserved rest.
