Thunderclap fires council’s anti-smoke drive

An online “thunderclap” is set to be unleashed on computers across the area in a bid to highlight the dangers of second hand smoke.

South Holland District Council is urging anyone with a Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr account to take part in the online event which will take place at 12pm on Monday, January 8.

Those who have signed up for free to the initiative will see the thunderclap publish a message on their accounts at that exact time.

The post that will be seen by your followers states: “We’re asking residents to ‘think before you light up’ cigarettes and be mindful of the dangers of second hand smoke.”

Coun Anthony Casson, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, said: “Pledging your support will only take a few seconds of your time.

“Go to our Facebook or Twitter account, follow the link and press ‘support’ on the Thunderclap page.

“It’s totally free of charge and you do not give any personal details away.”

A spokesman for the district council said: “South Holland District Council is encouraging people to think before they light up a cigarette – but we need your help to spread the word.

“We’re raising awareness about the dangers of second hand smoke, after we introduced a smoke free code warning of smoking near children.

“Our new campaign is aimed at encouraging smokers to consider the health risks of others before lighting up.

“Did you know that second hand smoke leads to an increased risk of strokes and heart disease, as well as ear and respiratory infections, particularly in children?

“It can also result in breathing problems.”
