A band comprising senior-aged musicians has no interest in making money – other than for charity.
RetrospeKt is seven friends aged from 65 upwards based in Moulton Seas End.
The band emerged after guitarist and vocalist John Heron placed a ‘wanted’ ad in shops and a magazine.
He said: “I was in a band in Essex before I moved up here and I missed it so I thought I would see if there was anybody willing to just meet up and play. I was happily surprised with the response.”
About 11 people turned up and what started out as a regular jam session led to the creation of RetrospeKt (there’s no explanation for the capital ‘K’ but the name is a merge of ‘retro’ – their repertoire is mainly 60s and 70s music – and the fact they play with respect).
Others in the band are Dave Pearson (lead guitar), Ray Faux (bass guitar), Keith Catley (rhythm guitar), Graham Priestley (keyboards), Tony Hobson (drums) and Steve Walker (vocals).
John (68) said: “I guess we’re a little bit like The Rolling Stones in that we all have our own little bit and, when it comes together, makes a great sound.”
“From the beginning we decided that we would play for the community. We love playing and we either play a gig as a charitable concern or we charge a fee, of which at least 80 per cent is sent to charity after minor expenses.
“The idea is to make as much money as possible for charities.”
The band has supported Help For Heroes, Callum Pite’s Smile Charity, Moulton Mill renovation and Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. However, it will go down to a six-piece next year as Keith is planning to emigrate.
RetrospeKt practises in Moulton Seas End Village Hall for three hours a week and is looking forward to one of its favourite annual events – the children’s Christmas party.
