Tennis the big winner as 12 teams battle it out for the Mary Burgess Cup

Saturday saw 12 doubles teams, consisting of a junior and an adult, battling it out for the Mary Burgess Cup at Spalding Tennis Club.

The trophy is named after Burgess because of her dedication to the club and for being a member of Spalding Town over the past 40 years.

The 83-year-old decided to use the cup to encourage juniors to play competitive tennis and the competition is now an annual event.

Competitors played bravely in torrential rain before the silver cup was presented to the joint points winners, Charlotte Smith and Luke Orton, along with a £10 sports shop voucher each.

Burgess was presented with flowers to thank her for her contribution to the club and the competition.

Thanks also go to Glenn Perkins, the club coach for co-ordinating the event.

  • Spalding Town had a successful week in the Peterborough and District Tennis League with all four teams claiming impressive wins.
