Teddy bears tuck into a picnic with pirates

pirate5A flotilla of pirate ships got shot at with cannons – of the water variety – as they made their way to a teddy bears’ picnic to Celebrate Surfleet.

Around half a dozen boats with pirates aboard were decorated for the river journey from Surfleet Reservoir to Wayman’s park – getting shot at by a rival gang of pirates lying in wait under the A16 underpass.

Treasure awaited at the end of their journey in the form of face painting, games and charity stalls.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind to the fearless sailors and their friends who joined the event organised by the Celebrate Surfleet committee, but hardy guests still took along their pirate teds and tucked into picnics.

The fun was rounded off with a hog roast at the Mermaid pub.

Committee member Judy Chapman said: “It was a shame about the weather – it would have been a lovely event if the sun had been shining, but thanks have to go to everyone involved organisation. It was a great event.”
