Talented duo Adam and Francesca bring national medals back to Long Sutton club

Two members of Long Sutton-based Shotokan Tokon Karate Club produced excellent performances at the recent JKA England National Championships.

Both Adam Moulding and Francesca Rivett picked up medals at the K2 Arena event at Crawley last Saturday – doing their club and chief instructor Mick Lowe proud.

Moulding, who is a 2nd Dan Black Belt, entered the senior grade male kata category and sailed into the finals.

There, four competitors chose their favourite kata to perform.

He chose to do ‘unsu’, which is a very senior kata that includes a 360 degree technique in the air.

Moulding excelled to take the silver medal, only missing out on gold by 0.2 of a point.

Not done there, he also entered the kumite (fighting) category and progressed through the rounds until he met the eventual winner and was eliminated.

Rivett, meanwhile, is a 1st Dan Black Belt and entered the female cadet kumite category.

She was immediately up against the current national champion and England squad member, making her bid for a medal a tricky task.

Rivett’s opponent was a brilliant counter attacker but she tried to find a way to penetrate her defences with rapid combinations of attacks but just missed out on scoring and had to settle for the bronze medal.

As a team, Shotokan Tokon Karate were very impressed with Rivett’s efforts.

She also entered the female cadet kata category and just missed out on a placement, taking fifth place.

  • Shotokan Tokon Karate Club are always looking for new members.

They meet at the Peele Leisure Centre in Long Sutton on Monday and Thursday evenings (7pm-8pm all grades, senior grades Thursday 8pm-9pm).
