Table toppers Spalding Town CC ready for Skegness clash

Spalding Town are back in pole position as they look to bounce back to the Lincolnshire Premier League.

Approaching the half way stage Spalding are five points clear of Sleaford at the top of the South Lincolnshire and Border Premier Division having only lost one of their opening nine games.

Last Saturday’s huge 201 run win over Stamford lifted them back to the top of the table and toppling this weekend’s opponents Skegness who suffered a surprise defeat to Freiston last weekend.

Young players including Jon Manton, Brandon Andrews, Josh Lawrence and Jordan Butcher have all been making vital contributions for the 1st XI being skippered for the first full season by Josh Newton.

Newton top scored with 91 last weekend and he’ll be hoping for the same again in the away fixture against the now third placed side.

“The season’s going well so far and we’ve only had the one slip up against Woodhall Spa a few weeks ago but since then it seems to be going well.

“We’ve been looking to blood some youngsters this season and they’ve all been performing well which is really great to see.

“We just need to keep going and not get complacent.

“I think that’s what did for us in our slip up against Woodhall Spa but we seemed to have learned from our mistakes there and have been on it since then.”

When asked how he’s find the captaincy Newton answers: “Not bad. I’m just learning about the admin side of it at the moment after taking over towards the end of last year.”

He also says he always expected he currently second placed Sleaford and Skegness as being their main challengers for the title this season.

They’ve already beaten Sleaford by five wickets this campaign at the Memorial Ground back in May.

This Saturday they face potentially their toughest trip of the season as they go to Skegness who are 13 points above Spalding in the table.

“They’re a very good side,” Newton said. “You always know it will be a tough game against Skegness and we’re going to have to be on it to win there. But we’re going well and can beat anybody on our day.”
