Table tennis round-up: Tied at the top as big-hitters impress in showdown

The leading two teams in Division One of the Spalding and District Table Tennis League clashed last week – and it didn’t disappoint.

South Holland and Moulton SE brought forward their match from later in the season, with Holland taking the first three to secure the win, Jean White taking the first in four before John Gilbert won the second in five.

The doubles followed in straight ends – which was some sort of fightback. The real thing happened next, with Stephen Appleby winning in three before Andrew Appleby took the final game on a fifth end deuce. South Holland now lead the table on wins.

JDM got in on the act with a 5-0 win over Mine’s a Pint. Tom and John Chesworth and Phil Chandler took the first four games in straight ends before John fought back from two down to win the fifth. They are now equal on points with the other two but have less wins from one more match.

At the foot of the table, Nets n Edges and Outsiders fought out a match in which the final score belies the closeness of a match with five deuces, including an 18-16. Reece Kerry got the Edgers off to a good start winning in three before Joe Beadle came from behind to win on a fifth end deuce.

However, the Edgers took their first doubles after losing the first end before Allan Lewis won a first singles of the season for a winning lead.

Kerry then added the final point which leaves them still bottom but just a point behind.

Meanwhile, TNC took advantage of the Division Two leaders having a rest night by closing the gap to just four. They did this with a 4-1 win over Hit n Hope, maintaining their 100 per cent match record but dropping their first game.

Matt Cole took another double – though he needed a high deuce in his second – as they ran into a 4-0 lead, but Ping Wang won the final game in four.

Assassins are moving upwards after adding a 4-1 win, their first of the season, over Hurricane Brothers to their total.

Carlos Caneiro and Hannah Gilbert took all four singles but were forced to concede the doubles to George and Sam Wallis. They also added another point in their unfinished match with Team TJ, which has moved on from 1-1 last week to 2-2 this with Gilbert adding a second but Jack Sawyer levelling.
