Table tennis round-up: New Spalding and District League season gets under way

The opening night of divisional action in the Spalding and District Table Tennis League served up a host a cracking contests.

It wasn’t all good news at Spalding High School, however, with a postponement and an unfinished match blotting the league’s copybook.

South Holland were, unfortunately, only able to field one player for their match against JDM, though they have a good record in this context.

Jean White turned out and got the season off to a good start with two wins, dropping the first end but taking the rest.

Newcomers Moulton SE faced regular title contenders Bladerunners, now made up of father and son duo Dave and James Gibson.

The former were the happier family at the end with the Appleby brothers, Stephen and Andrew, winning 3-2.

Stephen took the first game and recorded a double, while Dave won the final singles and teamed up with James for the doubles in the middle – with Stephen adding the final point.

Also recording a win by that score were Nets n Edges against Mine’s a Pint. In a close contest, Reece Kerry won both his singles and teamed up for the match winning doubles, but only the final game finished in straight ends.

Division One leaders however are Underdogs, who completed their match with Aches and Pains the previous week to register a 4-1 victory.

In the second tier, 200 up head the new table with five points gained at the expense of Castle Sports.

Strangely, three of the singles were won in three, but then in the doubles the winners were pushed to the fifth.

The other match saw Hurricane Brothers having a rerun with Pottermus Clarets after their cup match the previous week.

Tom Chesworth lived up to his potential by taking both of the singles off last year’s runners-up.

Peter Chester added a fourth before they paired up to take the doubles.

George Wallis scored for the losers.

Round Two of the Moulton Shield, to be played on October 3, sees Jokers meeting Underdogs, JDM playing Outsiders, Mine’s a Pint taking on Bladerunners, and Moulton SE challenging Pottermus Clarets, who are the only Division Two side left.
