Table tennis round-up: Moulton SE close in at the top of Division One

Week eight in the Spalding and District Table Tennis League was scheduled as a spare week – but happily six tables were in use.

At the start of the evening Moulton SE made it through to round three of the Moulton Shield when Stephen Appleby defeated Garry Wilkinson 21-12, 21-15, establishing an unassailable lead thanks to two previous won games.

Moulton then went on to play Mine’s a Pint’s Jeremy Hitcham in a match unfinished from week six.

With the score at 0-2, Hitcham took the first in five – but Stephen won again to advance his team to a 3-1 lead and second place in the table.

Hitcham then caught up with his side in a fixture against Underdogs.

The latter’s Kelvin Preville took the first game in straight ends before Hitcham matched his result in the second to level the tie.

Underdogs and Moulton then played their postponed match. Preville took the first, but the Applebys won the next three before he took the last game for a 2-3 scoreline.

Moulton now sit just two points behind South Holland with a game in hand.

Outsiders meanwhile were completing their match with JDM.

Previously, Joe Beadle had shared the spoils in his singles, but John and Tom Chesworth proved too strong, taking the remaining singles and the doubles.

Beadle and Tom Chesworth then contested their game from the return fixture scheduled for February.

Chesworth took the first two before Beadle levelled, but hung on to take the final game 12-10, revenge for defeat in the first match.
JDM now sit third in the table as a result.
