Table tennis round-up: Appleby boys boost Moulton SE in Bladerunners epic

Week 17 of the Spalding and District Table Tennis League saw ten matches played but was so busy some were left unfinished.

In Division One, Moulton SE faced Bladerunners. Two games went to the fifth end, one taking a mammoth 50 minutes, and another was four ends before they had to call a halt.

As things stand Moulton are leading 3-1, with Andrew Appleby winning two and brother Stephen one, the pair only losing the doubles.

Currently they are tied with Jokers at the top of the table, the latter picking up a point from their solitary game against Outsiders.

Facing JDM last week John Gilbert won both his singles for Holland, but Phil Chandler and John Chesworth won their other games.

The doubles decided the match in Holland’s favour 3-2.

Bladerunners are some way behind in fourth, clear of Underdogs who were only able to finish a postponed match with Moulton 2-3 before postponing their scheduled fixture.

A hard-fought match between Nets n Edges and Mine’s a Pint ended in a 4-1 win for the ‘home’ team, but was much closer than the score suggests.

The first game was see-saw, opening with a 2-11 game before closing out in four to Reece Kerry with two deuces.

Three of the other games were similar with the next singles going from two ends up to trailing in the fifth, before turning that around.

Only one of the scheduled Division Two matches was played with contenders 200up defeating MatDuf’s juniors 5-0.

That score line does not reflect the way in which the youngsters are improving.

Leaders Pottermus Clarets faced Castle Sports across two unfinished matches.

They led the first, delayed from November, 4-0 and rounded that off with another win.

The other from the previous week they extended from 1-0 to 4-0.

They then faced Hurricane Brothers with the score 1-1 brought forward, losing two singles and a doubles.

Earlier, despite having a handicap advantage MatDuf lost 3-1 to Aches and Pains.
