SWIMMING: Spalding coach’s delight at progress

South Lincs Competitive Swimming Club’s head coach enjoyed the success of 15-year-old Luke Elliott’s British Championship 400m freestyle swim, along with new personal bests from Will Swain (14), Matthew Gray (15), Tom Mitchell (17) and Alice Gowing (15) at the Burns Open at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, last weekend.

Callum Lawson said: “This was a level one competition showing some of British swimming up-and-coming talent.
“From my coaching perspective, the skills are showing signs of improvement, and swimmers times are holding steady, or improving.”

A total of 16 swims from six swimmers saw Elliott achieving first place in 200m and 50m backstroke, second in 100m backstroke and third place in both 400m freestyle and 200m freestyle.
Matthew Gray was another medallist with a third place in 100m backstroke.
Cheryl Wilson (20)swam in the girls’ Open category for her 100m backstroke event.
