Sweet success for Tracey

A South Holland cake maker is celebrating success with an amazing owl design.

Tracey Sole took a silver medal at an international show held at Birmingham’s NEC arena.
Her steampunk owl design took the award in the carved and sculpted cake category after she spent around 20 hours on the model.
She also had success with a Day of the Dead design cake.

For cake designers everywhere, AI has become a bit of an issue.
“People see these images online and ask us to make one. But the AI-designs aren’t real, so it’s sometimes not possible,” said Tracey, who runs The Fondant Cake House in Gedney Drove End.
But, determined to put herself to the test, she created an AI steam punk owl (pictured top right) and then recreated it in cake and fondant for the show.
“I had to make a support structure and then add layers of cake and Dutch cream before covering it in fondant and air-brushing the detail,” she said.
A cake-maker for 30 years, Tracey takes commissions for celebrations.
And her festival cake (above centre) was also a medal winner – taking bronze in the category at Birmingham NEC.
The focus was on visual impact and decoration was applied to polystyrene cake shapes.
“There were cakes for different festivals, and I chose the Day of the Dead,” she said.
Designed from scratch, the Festival Cake was awarded a bronze medal by the judges.
