Sutton’s super Sunday

Long Sutton are heading for Division One of the Rutland Sunday League

After just missing out on a step up last season, when they finished third, Sutton made no mistake this time, finishing top of the table.
With just one game left to play (at relegation-battling Uffington on September 3) Sutton are 48 points clear of second-placed Ufford Park after beating Werrington Seconds by 83 runs on Sunday.
The hosts made a slow start and were two wickets down with only 10 runs on the board.
However, the arrival of Paul Edgeller at No.4 changed the match completely. When he was ninth out for 107, Sutton had scored 222.
Josh Baker (38) and Daniel Oldfield (16) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures, with the former sharing a 74-run fifth-wicket stand with Edgeller, whose
89-ball innings included two 6s and 14 4s.
Hafiz Ali Butt (3-30) and Fakhar Jamil (3-46) were the most impressive of the visitors’ bowlers.
In response, both Werrington openers were out without scoring, bowled by Josh Baker, who ended with figures of 3-42 from his eight overs.
The next four batsmen scored well but failed to build their innings and once the tail was exposed, Sutton rattled through the rest of the wickets with Daniel Oldfield (3-1) and Jake Burton (3-30) also taking three wickets as Werrington were bowled out for 139 in the 35th over.
The Division Two title adds to an impressive honours list for Sutton, which includes winning Division Four in 2019 and the Division Three Covid Cup a year later. They were also promoted from Division Three in 2021.
The Division Four East derby went in favour of Moulton Harrox, who beat  Long Sutton Seconds by 97 runs.
Harrox struck 208/5 from their 40 overs, with the visitors’ reply stalling on 111/9. It leaves them with an outside chance of pipping Adidda for second place in the final table.
The teams meet at Moulton on September 3 in their penultimate matches.
