Sutton Bridge to Skegness coastal path consultation

Proposals to improve public access on a stretch of coast from Sutton Bridge to Skegness are out for consultation.

Natural England has published a plan for the 57-mile stretch which, it hopes, will become part of the England Coastal Path.

The path is a 2,700 mile walking route and the newest national trail being developed.

Currently there is an eight week consultation period when members of the public can make representation to the Secretary of State before a final decision is made.

Proposals include an additional 12 miles of new public access and the route has been developed to avoid wildlife disturbance in sensitive locations.

The Sutton Bridge to Skegness route is the second stretch to be developed in the county and the new route will allow walkers access to the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve.

Plans for a third Lincolnshire section, from Mablethorpe to the Humber Bridge, are due to be published this summer.

Natural England is also developing proposals for a stretch to Hunstanton along the east coast.

“The mental and physical health benefits for exercise and being in the open air are well documented, so it is really important that we engage with and promote the England Coastal Path, said county councillor Eddy Poll, the executive member for commercial and environmental management.

Representations must be received by Natural England by midnight on March 21.

Copies of the report are available at a number of libraries and council offices and on the website: www.gov.uk/governmment/collections/england-coast-path-sutton-bridge-to-skegness
