Super Spalding 2nd stroll to win in title decider

Spalding Golf Club’s 2nd team are the champions of their South Lincs Scratch League division after defeating defending champions Belton Park 2nd in a winner takes all match at the Surfleet course.

The talented Spalding side put in a strong team performance to win by a convincing 5.5-0.5 margin and land the league’s Division One title for 2nd teams.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Mark Mitchell and Mark Dodds (7&6), Phil Packard and Chis Hancock (6&4), Lawrie Haley and Steve Camm (4&2), Chris Ward and Calum Walker (4&2) and Jerry Philo and Mark Jones (3&2).

Paul Johnson and Richard Laud halved their game to complete their 5.5 point haul.

The team will now play the north Lincolnshire champions in the county final, which is played at the Surfleet course in early October.

Meanwhile, Spalding’s 1st team finished their league season off in style with a 4.5-1.5 win at Sleaford.

Winning pairs for the victorious visitors were Andy Grimwood and Trevor Laud (7&6), Lloyd Chatham and Jason Houghton (3&1), Chas Lacey and Drew Warnes (1up) and Keith Hearne and Mark Cooley (1up), while Dan Hines and Stuart Parker halved their game.

Spalding’s top team finished in third place in their league, just three points behind champions Blankney and runners up Belton Park.

  • Calum Lewis (84-9=75) won the Spalding junior club champion title, scoring a nett 75. Hugo Kedzlie (79-2=77) took second place on countback from Will Hopkins (81-4=77) after both scored a nett total of 77.
  • The annual ‘Captains versus Presidents’ team challenge match this year resulted in a 6-4 win for president David Hall’s team.

Best performances for the president’s team came from Peter Gooderson and John Crampton (4&3), Michael Coaton and Alan Singer (4&3) and Neil West and Geoff Skinner (3&2).

For the captains’ team Bob Sutton and Bill Creasey (3&1), Mike Murphy and Pete Williams (2&1) and skipper Peter Bridge and Chris Huggins (2&1) all won well.

  • A social match against Peterborough Milton played at the Surfleet course resulted in 5-3 win for hosts Spalding.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Peter Bridge and Adam Keogh (1up), Lawrie Haley and Neil West (1up), Steve Camm and Paul Tudor (2&1), Stewart Sharp and Bill Creasey (4&3) and Stuart Parker and Peter Jullien (3&2).

  • The last 13-hole Wednesday evening Stableford competition of the season attracted 46 entries – and it was Peter Jullien who came out on top with 30 points.

Pete Grimwood and Pete Wheeler both scored 29 points, with Calum Walker, Phil Calvert and Johnny Walker completing the leaderboard (all on 28pts).

Over the season, Mark Cooley won the prize for the best ten cards, with the most points scored prize going to Simon Goemans.
