Successful weekend for bowls teams

It was a successful weekend for Spalding Lightning with wins in the double triples, the Denny Cup and the Yetton Trophy.

On Sunday, Spalding Lightning’s under 30s double triples team had a comfortable 31 shot win against Nottingham.
Spalding Lightning were always in front with the lead 12-4 at five ends and 29-8 by ten ends before Nottingham shook hands around 14 ends with the score at 40-9.
Next up are Melton or Barwell on Saturday, November 26.
Rink Scores: Home – Ruby Hill, Stephen Harris and Jordan Philpott – won 11-7. Away – Ollie Jeapes, Chelsea Spencer and Dominic McVittie – won 29-2
qOn Saturday, Spalding Lightning safely negotiated their way through to the second round of both the Denny Cup and Yetton Trophy, being the national inter-club knockout competitions for men and women respectively.
Starting with the Denny Cup, where Spalding are the defending champions after winning the 2021/22 competition earlier this year.
Spalding Lightning started their defence with a win against local rivals, Stamford.
The two teams actually met in the second round last season where the winning margin was 14 shots but it was far more comfortable this time round.
Spalding Lightning were 28-16 up by five ends but the main damage was done between five and ten ends where the lead was extended to 35 shots (62-27).
The lead was 38 shots by 15 ends before Stamford acknowledged defeat when the rinks had played 19 or 20 ends with the final score being 100-56.
Winning on two rinks and drawing on two, the top winning rink was skipped by McVittie, with Lewis Parnell, Martin Simpson and Martin Spencer, who won 32-9.
Well done also to Dan Mills and David Nunney who both made their Denny Cup debut for the club.
Next up are Peterborough on Saturday, November 19.
qPlayed at the same time, the Spalding Lightning women had an equally impressive win against Peterborough in the Yetton Trophy.
Spalding Lightning were already 22 shots (32-10) in front by five ends and the score was 60-19 by ten ends.
The lead was 50 shots at 15 ends (87-27) and the final score was 116-34.
The main damage was done by the two home rinks who recorded an incredible accumulative score of 86-7 but the top winning rink was skipped by Maggie Wheatley, with Jean Patterson, Petrine Ault and Trish Stafford, who won 48-4.
Next up are Stamford also on Saturday, November 19.

Away – Jan Sinclair, Gill Haydon, Sandra Hammond and Maisie Belding – won 19-10; Ann Newbury, Michelle Billingsley, Tracy Philpott and Betty Deaton – lost 11-17.
qOn Sunday, November 6 Spalding met Boston at home for a friendly match.
Spalding started well with a 13-point advantage after nine ends.
In the second nine ends Boston started to make a comeback. Finally after 18 ends Spalding had won across four rinks with a final score of 101-84.
Top scoring rink for Spalding was skipped by Maggie Wheatley with Eric Wakefield and Paula Lawson.
