Stonemason puts final touches to memorial

A Long Sutton stonemason is putting the final touches to a new memorial to the area’s First World War casualties.

Richard King is engraving the polished grey obelisk which will stand on two decks of grey granite near the main war memorial in Boston.

The monument will officially be unveiled on Armistice Day next Tuesday.

On display will also be a list of names of all those from the Boston area who died in the Great War – more than 800 in total.

The memorial has been paid for entirely by public subscription – donations from the public, schools, businesses and councillors.

Mr King, of Richard King Memorials, Bridge Road Industrial Estate, has generously waived his fee, charging only for materials.

He said he wanted to make his contribution in honour of the memory of his great grandfather, Sgt George Robert Richer, of Holbeach, who served throughout the First World War with the 8th Lincolnshire Regiment, receiving the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal, both with bar.
