Spooky fun for a great cause

A Spalding man is turning his love for the fun-filled Halloween spirit into cash for a cancer charity this Thursday when he transforms his house and garden into a spooky wonderland.

Jamie Knight has transformed his Cathedral Drive home and garden into a trick or treater’s paradise for the past decade and said the last few years he’s drawn more than 100 visitors each Halloween with his attractions.

This year two people close to him and his family have been diagnosed with cancer so he’s turning his passion for all things fun and spooky into a fundraising opportunity.

Halloween games with prizes and photo opportunities will be run on the night by Jamie and a host of his family – including wife Tracy, his mum and dad and aunt and uncle – all for donations towards Macmillan Cancer Support.

Jamie said he’s been working on the attractions since Sunday, after he originally planned to get cracking on Saturday but was delayed by rain.

“I’ve been into Halloween for years and over the last ten years I’ve used my garden to really go to town on it,” he said of his annual event.

Some of the props are bought and some Jamie makes himself, including the witch stirring a cauldron, which runs on the wiper motor of a car.

Other items include electronic ghost projectors.

Jamie said the event always spreads cheer and he’s happy to get feedback from visitors.

“I got a letter from a child saying it was their best ever trick or treat,” he said. “We get a lot of compliments.”

Jamie, who works for the South Holland District Council environmental services team, will be busy setting up until darkness falls in the afternoon of Thursday, when visitors will be welcomed.
