Speeding driver in court

A Whaplode man who was helping deliver a BMW X5 to its new owner has been convicted of careless driving.
Luke Fortune (24) was following the vehicle in a Range Rover Evoque in “treacherous” conditions on the A1M southbound at Stilton.
He was driving his vehicle at excessive speed, too close to the BMW, constantly braking and changing lanes without indicating, Peterborough Magistrates’ Court heard on Monday.
Prosecutor Graham Allen said both vehicles were estimated to be doing 90mph despite heavy rain and surface spray reducing visibility on May 17.
They left the A1 to turn on to the A14.
“They were not racing and not attempting to pass one another,” said Mr Allen. “They were clearly in convoy, going too quickly and too closely.”
Fortune, of Turnpike Road, was not present for the hearing but had admitted the offence to police, saying that they were taking the lead vehicle from a local car dealership to a customer.
The bench imposed six penalty points on Fortune’s licence, fined him £440 and made an order for £110 costs and £44 victim surcharge.
