Special ‘womble’ meet for Graham

Members of the Spalding Wombles group will be meeting on Sunday to hold a special litter pick.

The team will be meeting to remember Graham Walmsley, known as Brian, who died at the end of January at the age of 64.
One of the first members when the group started during the first lockdown, Graham became well-known for his lengthy posts on the group’s Facebook page outlining his adventures while out retrieving litter.
He took early retirement from an electricity company and became a gamekeeper – combining his passion for the outdoors with his shooting hobby.
The Wombles will be meeting on Sunday in the car park of Lidl at 10am and the litter pick will be followed by light refreshments at Spalding’s Constitutional Club.
“He was with us from the very start. One of the first members and one of the most enthusiastic,” said one of the Wombles’ founders Simon Law.
“He is very much missed by everyone who knew him and is gone way too soon. Graham would always be the one climbing into dykes to get litter. He was a lovely man,” said Simon.
It was through his detailed posts of litter picking adventures that Graham became well known.
Graham was married to Carol, with children Joe, Sian and Rachael.
The Wombles of Spalding Common was founded at the start of 2021 when a group of friends went for a lockdown walk and noticed how much litter was blighting the town.
The group grew rapidly and now has more than 3,000 members. It received a special award in the Pride of South Holland event earlier this year.
