Special guests Windass and Sutherland are a big hit at Holbeach United’s Sportsman’s Dinner

Holbeach United’s latest Sportsman’s Dinner was a big hit on Thursday night as ex-Premier League striker Dean Windass rolled into town.

The former Hull City, Bradford City and Aberdeen frontman – who famously scored a play-off winner at Wembley – was the headline act at the Tigers Social Club bash.

He was joined by comedian Jamie Sutherland (who is also an MC with Premier League side Everton) and both spoke superbly on the night.

The event raised about £2,000 for the club, leaving social club vice chairman Tim Cole delighted with how things went.

Cole said: “Our second Sportman’s Dinner was a great success, just like the first. Everyone was coming up to us after saying that they’d had a great night – and we have also received many messages since telling us the same.

“The committee work really hard to put these events on and a lot of planning goes into them, so it’s really great to see it was worth it.

“Dean was great and down to earth. He had some fantastic stories about his career and touched on his time in Scotland, as well as his moves around England.

“There was also some funny moments on his punditry career. He had everyone laughing with his stories but also mentioned the other side of things when life can get hard.

He was a great speaker and went down really well.

“Comedian Jamie Sutherland was a big hit as well. I had a look round the room a few times and everyone was roaring with laughter.

“We have raised a good amount for the club so we just want to thank everybody that came, as well as those who gave up their time to help us.

“All in all, it was a fantastic and funny night. Now it’s time to start planning the next one!”

Meanwhile, Holbeach United kick off their pre-season campaign with a home clash against Skegness Town on Saturday (3pm).
