Spalding Town skipper Rob Ambrose is “disappointed” with their second season in Lincs ECB Premier League.
A campaign which started promisingly and included the brilliant scalp of a first defeat for eventual champions Bourne ended last Saturday in a somewhat limp manner with defeat to Bracebridge Heath.
However, Ambrose accepts that his squad had little to play for and would have had to play out of their skin to get a result.
As it was the miserly 112 target they posted was easily surpassed.
Ambrose said: “I’m a bit disappointed but they’re a top side with good players.
“When you’re not at the races, they’re the sort of side you don’t want to be up against.”
Spalding finished ninth out of the 12-team league.
The captain already has one eye on what he anticipates will be an even tougher 2015 – and has “irons in the fire” for players.
“There’ll be one or two changes,” he said. “With the likes of Grantham coming up, we are going to have to work a lot harder to stay in the league.
“We can’t just expect to be a Premier League side because we’ve stuck around for a couple of seasons.
“Generally, I’ve been pleased with how we’ve performed against the top two or three sides – on our day we can beat anyone, but by the same token we can lose to anyone too.
“So I’m going to be looking for some more consistency from us. I want us to be stringing four or five results together, rather than two or three.”
Highlights of the season for Ambrose were Josh Newton’s match-winning innings at Louth – “as good a knock as you’ll see from a local player” – and Charlie Kearns’ wickets in that Bourne win.
He said: “I wasn’t there but I understand he was unplayable that day. Even though we have overseas players, it’s great to see local lads doing well.”
