Spalding Town praying for good weather after Wisbech washout

Spalding Town Cricket Club are worried that the weather may scupper their pre-season schedule.

They saw Saturday’s friendly at Wisbech postponed after rain on Friday night, but will try again at Boston this Saturday (12.30pm).

With their Lincs ECB Premier League opener against Woodhall Spa looming the following weekend, skipper Rob Ambrose admits he and his new-look side are praying for good weather.

New signings Dan Millgate, Roy Tilley, Josh Downey and Luke Hollingworth are all expected to feature, while talented teenager Jimmy Hook will also be in the squad, having just returned from Lincolnshire under-17s tour of Sri Lanka.

Ambrose said: “Sadly, last weekend was a non-starter. Nobody wants to damage their pitch on the eve of the new season, so any rain will see these friendly games called off.

“We had a good net session on Saturday, but desperately need some game time before the Woodhall Spa match.

“It’s a very tough opening game, so we need the practice really.

“Boston will be a very good test for us, I’d have them as favourites to win the South Lincs and Border League this year.

“It’ll be great to give a few of the new guys a game and we’re also looking forward to having a good look at young Jimmy.

“I think he’s one that could easily break into the first team this year. We’ve got very high hopes for him here.”
