Spalding Town 2nd do neighbours Moulton Harrox 2nd a big favour by beating leaders

Spalding Town 2nd pulled off a shock success on Saturday as they defeated South Lincs and Border League Division One leaders Newborough 2nd by 14 runs.

Batting first after winning the toss at Seas End Hall, Spalding’s second string posted 180-9 from their 45 overs.

Table-topping Newborough could only muster 166 in reply as they were bowled out in 41 overs.

Will Gardner (33), Matt Gill (30), Neo Timothy (26) and Jay White (26) all scored nicely for Town, despite Nicholas Lawton taking stunning figures of 7-23 for the visitors.

But it was late runs from Joe Broomfield (16 not out) and Michael Morris (17 not out) that ultimately proved key for Town.

Justin Marchant (60 not out) starred for Newborough in reply, sharing a big stand with Lawton (33) for the final wicket.

But Timothy (1-19) bowled Lawton to seal an impressive win, with Broomfield (4-36) the pick of the bowlers.

That win helped the title prospects of second-placed Moulton Harrox 2nd, who enjoyed an 82-run victory over Heckington 2nd and are now just 25 points off the pace.

Jake Morton (51), Curtis Todd (46) and Jamie Juckes (26) all made an impression to help Harrox post 242 batting first at Broad Lane.

Thuva Murali (3-34), Todd (3-56), Danny Jackson (2-19) and Juckes (1-8) then starred with the ball to dismiss the visitors for 160 in 39 overs.
