‘Spalding swimming pool in need of urgent deep clean’

Photographs taken at Castle Sports Complex swimming pool show that it is in urgent need of a deep clean, says an angry user and Voice reader.

The pictures, which show mould and grime in changing room and shower areas, are said to have been taken four weeks ago.

South Holland District Council says 1Life, which manages the leisure centre on behalf of the council, is making improvements.

The Voice reader said claims of progress in cleanliness at the pool were wide of the mark, adding: “Where? SHDC should hang their heads in shame – no improvement seen whatsoever. The pool is becoming a health hazard.
“SHDC needs to take action. The pool is no longer fit for purpose. Deep clean urgently required!”

Spalding Castle district councillor Gary Taylor said: “I am well aware of these issues and this is the reason the female changing rooms are closed at present, in order to install new flooring and toilets. In the meantime alternative changing rooms are being used.

“When the work is completed in the female changing rooms the work will commence in the male area.
“The alternative was to close this whole facility while the work was being carried out, which we thought would create more disruption for users.

“I use these facilities and frequently hear feedback from users, which I welcome.”

The district council’s cabinet was told last November by a task group of councillors who looked at the facility following a wave of criticism that “corrective work” had already begun.

A council spokesman said: “1Life are working to make improvements to the complex, with new flooring and toilets currently being installed in the female changing areas and improvements to the male changing areas to follow. On behalf of 1Life, we apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.

“In addition to a dedicated cleaning provision, all 1Life staff have cleaning duties included within their contracts, to ensure that the premises is regularly cleaned.

“If anyone has concerns over conditions at the complex they should report this on site at reception or by phone, 01775 725978, email, [email protected] or 1Life’s online feedback form.”
