Selfless volunteer Mick Clarkson is building a reputation as a community champion who makes things happen.

First it was Pop’s Patch – a four square metre piece of rough council land in Royce Road which he transformed and maintains; now he’s helping to create a 50 square metre sensory garden at The Garth School.

The 53-year-old father-of-three is working with the Spalding special school in Pinchbeck Road to create a wonderful outside safe sensory area for all pupils to use throughout the year.
The idea was conceived by The Friends of Garth School (FOGS) and staff member Luke Jackson, who is managing the project, contacted Mick after hearing of his efforts in Royce Road.

Mick said: “It was lovely when I was introduced to one of the classes and it was explained what we’re going to be doing.
“The pupils just broke out in applause and the smiles on their faces was priceless.”

The project is now into its third week and has an open day on Saturday for people to see more, bring materials and perhaps get involved.
Mick said: “It seems to have gone really big. Everybody is coming in from all areas to see what they can do.
“I’ve even had a £200 donation from somebody I only know through Facebook.”

Mick works for Gist in Wardentree Lane, Pinchbeck, and the transport firm has been very generous in its support, even granting him an extra week’s paid holiday.

Daran Bland is executive headteacher for The Spalding Special Schools Federation, which includes The Garth and Priory Schools.
“We are really delighted and grateful for Mick’s support,” he said.
“He came and spoke to us about the work he has undertaken with ‘Pop’s Patch’ and his enthusiasm for making interesting and effective use of outside spaces was infectious.

“He has already cleared an area to the front of the school and has some really great ideas to make this space a real asset for pupils with complex and profound learning difficulties.
“Mick has also offered to maintain the garden in to the future.

“It is heartwarming to know that there are people in our community that are prepared and willing to put the needs of others first and volunteer precious time.
“In fact a number of other organisations and people have also offered support to this project.

“Huge thanks go to Mick, FOGS and all those helping for the amazing job that they are doing.”

Mick has lived in Royce Road for 33 years and sons Darren and Nicky are helping with the project.
