Spalding murder victim Warren Free’s children have described him as “a great dad who was always there for us” in a moving tribute from his family today.

Warren, who is described by his loved ones as a smiling man with a great sense of humour, had lived in Spalding for eight years, having moved there from Wales with his young son to be near his family.

Warren’s parents, Bob and Stephanie, who currently live in Portugal, spoke of their doting son’s compassion and care for others, which even led to him giving clothes and food to homeless people.

“He always put others before himself,” said Stephanie.  “He had a big heart and if he saw someone else in need, he would do all he could for them.  Even his wish for a burial stemmed from thinking of others and wanting to ensure that his family had somewhere special to visit and remember him”.

As well as his 13 year-old son, Adam, who he brought up single-handedly, Warren also leaves behind a daughter, Zoe (20), who lives in Wales.

Speaking on behalf of herself and Adam, Zoe said: “He was a great dad who was always there for us when we needed him.  We love him and will miss him dearly”.

Warren’s sister, Bernice, and her husband, Tim, expressed their thanks to the community in Spalding for the support the family have received.

They said: “We are grateful for the assistance people have given to the police investigation and have been very touched by the gestures of flowers and cards.

“In particular, we’d like to thank the Late Shopper and Jack’s Fish Bar, together with all the people who added to the donation for Adam. It means a great deal to all of us, especially Adam, who effectively has no mother or father now as a result of this terrible tragedy.”
