Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s Ruby is a gem for England under-18s

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s Ruby Hill was part of the England team which retained the under-18 British Isles title in Aberdeen.

Hill was selected in the mixed pairs with Aaron Johnson (from Norfolk) and was joined in the mixed fours by Ryan Nash (Moonfleet 200), Liam Harris (Beccles) and Adam Pitfield (Wellingborough).

Up first was the mixed pairs, where Hill and Aaron Johnson won all three matches against Wales, Ireland and Scotland to claim the gold medal.

The Spalding teen almost claimed a clean sweep in the mixed fours, winning two but narrowly losing out to Scotland in the third.

Despite the defeat, England won the series overall, with Scotland runners-up.

  • Three more Spalding players have been on England duty this month, with Graham Smith and Mathew Orrey representing England in the mixed test series against Wales in Bristol.

Annie Dunham was also selected for the ladies’ series against Scotland in New Earswick.

In the mixed event, Smith and Orrey were joined by Julie Leake in the triples, which they won, before Orrey won his pair match and Smith narrowly lost.

With the overall scores at 3-2 to Wales, it was all to play for in the singles on the final day. Orrey lost a close match, while Smith’s victory turned out in vain as Wales ran out 7-4 winners.

In the ladies’ event, Dunham was joined by Rebecca Field and Ellen Faulkner. They won their triples match before Dunham and Amy Stanton won their pairs as England led 4-1 going into the singles. England lost their opener before Dunham was beaten by Leanne Furye as the team stuttered – but Sandy Hazel clinched the series win.
