Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s over-60s celebrate county promotion

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s over-60s county league team secured 21 points from their last two fixtures to secure promotion back into Division One next season.

On April 5, they travelled to play Boston B. Despite starting slowly, they moved ahead in the second half of the match to secure three winning rinks – one drawn and losing on one – but, importantly securing the aggregate score.

The final result was 15-3 (111-75 shots) in Spalding’s favour.

The best winning rink secured an excellent result of 35 shots to 10. This rink was skipped by Roger Perkins and he was ably assisted by Pat Fillbrook, Geoff Craft, and Derek Overton.

Captains for the day were David Lunn and Graham Hicks.

In their last game, they travelled to Grantham on Tuesday, with both teams in contention for promotion.

Spalding needed a minimum of five points from the game and Grantham 14 points, to finish in second place.

Spalding started badly and, at the half way stage, were losing on all rinks and losing the aggregate score by 17 shots.

However, they showed great determination and continued their fight back to the last end, and finished ahead on three rinks, although two of them were rinks by a one-shot margin.

That meant that, despite winning on three rinks, Spalding were unable to secure the aggregate score.

The final result was 12-6 to Grantham’s, with an aggregate score of 94-83 in their favour.

However, that was enough to secure promotion for Spalding.

The winning rink was skipped by Graham Wright, who was assisted by Mick Dolton, Dave Amess and Rob West.

Captains for the day were Lunn and Hicks once again.

  • Spalding IBC played their last mixed county league game against Lincoln and had a convincing 106-86 victory, gaining 14 points.

Their top rink was John Needham, Betty Deaton, Janet Staples and John Laud.

  • Spalding IBC’s friendly bowlers travelled to Boston for what turned out to be a very enjoyable game.

Spalding started well and, by the end of 11 ends, had a slight lead.

They increased their lead in the second half and won the game 131-94, with both teams winning three rinks apiece.

The best winning rink was Chris Williamson, Sue Lovett, Rob West and Jenny Horner, with the latter also captain on the day.

Thanks also go to Edna Perkins for her assistance.
