Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s awesome foursome storm to national success

There was national glory for Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s Ruby Hill, Chelsea Tomlin, Martin Spencer and Mathew Orrey as they won the Mixed Fours title after beating Ben Paulley’s rink 19-9 in the final.

Having qualified through the regional rounds, the foursome headed to Loddon Vale, Basingstoke for the finals over the weekend – where they faced a tough opener against Wayne Wilgress (Norfolk) in the last 16.

A high-class match saw Spalding hold their nerve and win 16-15 to book their place in the last eight, where they ran out comfortable 29-2 winners against Hounslow.

In the semi-finals it was Jamie Holmes’ four from Barking who were between Spalding and a place in the final.

A nip and tuck match saw Spalding take control in the latter stages to secure a 16-11 victory.

A good start in the final settled any nerves, as Spalding were 9-1 up after five ends and they never looked back, securing a 19-9 win to claim the title.

  • In the National Mixed Pairs event held at the same venue straight after the mixed fours, Rebecca Simpson and Graham Smith were in action having also qualified from the regional rounds.

In the last 16, they beat Michael Knight from Whiteknights 18-9 to book a place in the quarter finals where they faced defending champions Sandy Hazel and Perry Martin from Swale.

A top class match saw the Swale duo take the spoils, winning 22-8.
