Spalding Indoor Bowls Club duo Spencer and Dunham bag mixed pairs glory for England

Martin Spencer and Annie Dunham won the mixed pairs event as they represented England in the World Indoor Bowls Council Championships in Swansea.

Both Spalding Indoor Bowls Club players qualified out of their group in the singles before losing in the knockout stages – but they teamed together in the mixed pairs, with great success.

In the group stages they had a tough opener against Chloe Watson and Graham McKee, but managed to run away with the second set after drawing the first.

They then beat C De Graaff and M Van Tol from the Netherlands. After struggling for most of the first set, they were 8-1 down with two to play but picked up two fours to win it 9-8 and then ran away with second set.

In the winner-takes-all final group game, they played Pauline Price and Jarred Breen from Wales.

They lost the first set narrowly as Breen took out their closest bowl, before winning the second with a jack trail from Spencer in the deciding end.

In the tie break, it was more tension before the England duo took the spoils to reach the semi-finals where they faced Amy Williams and Mark Harding. In that last four clash they controlled the match, but only won both sets narrowly to reach the final.

In the final against Amy Stanton and Damian Doubler, Dunham continued her good form, backed up well by Spencer and they were always in the control, taking the title with ease.
