Spalding Golf Club’s men rip up the form book to storm into Elsham fours finals

Spalding Golf Club’s first team left their patchy league form behind to earn a notable away victory at Seacroft in the quarter finals of the Elsham fours competition.

With father and son team Mark and Ollie Mitchell narrowly losing their match 1 down, Charles Lacey and Dan Hines hit back with a superb 7up win to level the scores.

That was followed by first team captain Andy Grimwood and plus 4 handicapper Simon Richardson halving their match to clinch an overall 6up win for Spalding.

The team now progress to finals weekend at Elsham on August 14.

  • Spalding’s second team continued their unbeaten season with a 6-0 whitewash against Belton Park GC on Sunday.

With much of the course very wet due to unseasonal downpours the previous day, the Spalding team adapted the better to the conditions.

Phil Tweddell and Mark Cooley led the way by winning 5&4, followed by Mark Payne and former junior captain Calum Lewis also winning 5&4.

Skipper Mark Jones and Tom Ladbrook were next, winning 2up on the 18th, before the rout was completed by Trev Laud and Laurie Haley (2&1), Chris Moxon and another of the club’s promising juniors Ed Brand (1up), and Matt Richardson and Phil Wakefield (1 up) thanks to a birdie from Richardson on 18.

  • Fortune wasn’t on the side of Andy Rafferty and the Spalding 3rd team, who lost both their fixtures over the weekend.

They were beaten 4-2 away at Burghley Park with the winning pair for Spalding being Robin Exley and Neil West, while Andy Rafferty and Ian Ford and Mick Bell and John Brett halved their match.

Sunday’s trip to Boston West also ended in a 4-2 defeat, with Brian Naylor and Paddy Wheeler and Doug Alexander and Bill Prosser being Spalding’s winners.

  • Club Captain David Tasker continued his busy season with his Charity Am/Am event.

And, inspite of the inclement weather, some 100 golfers took part in this charity day.

Winners of the ladies’ competition were Millie and Hannah Thorold, Dina Reedman and Olive Gooderson, with Chris Brooks, Bill Main and Willie and Darren Ford the men’s champions.

The mixed competition was won by visitors John and Linda Dunwoodie (Peterborough Milton) and Paul and Kim Pateman (Newark).

The day was a huge success for Tasker’s charity for the year, CMT UK Ltd, with aroud £2,500 raised. Tasker thanks all of the sponsors and teams that took part.
