Spalding Golf Club’s Charles takes route 66 to book place at EGU event

Charles Lacey will represent Spalding Golf Club at this year’s EGU national competition at Woodhall Spa following a superb 66 in the qualifier held at the Surfleet course.

The two-handicapper birdied six holes to finish two shots clear of Matt Richardson on 68, with Dougie Alexander, Jake Lilley and Dick Parker a shot further behind on 69.

All players earned handicap reductions for their efforts.

  • Spalding’s first team remain winless in the South Lincs Scratch League following a disappointing home loss to Blankney.

Spalding winners were Ollie Mitchell and James Crampton and Dan Hines and Lloyd Chatham, with Matt Richardson and Wayne Wallace halving their match in a 3.5-2.5 defeat.

The third team, meanwhile, fared a little better with a closely-fought 3-3 draw at Belton Park in torrential rain.

They followed that up with a 3-3 draw at home to Toft, with Dougie Alexander and Chris Hull cruising to a notable 7&6 win for Spalding at the Surfleet course.

  • Club captain David Tasker’s busy schedule of mixed matches continued with a crushing 7-1 victory over Sleaford.

Winners for Spalding were vice captain Mike Crampton and Jenny Pipe, Max Ellis and Ann Tasker, Neil West and Liz Holbrook, Tony Holbrook and Diane West, Neil Wilkinson and Eileen Bridge and Peter Bridge and Jean Wilkinson.

The other two matches were halved.

This was followed up by an excellent 5-3 win over Belton Park.

Wins this time were registered by Crampton and Wendy Revill, David Barks and Lynda Double, David Halfteck and Elaine Harrison, Alan Pritchard and Julie Gooderson and Sam Sampson and Maureen Orwell.

  • Spalding Golf Club’s ladies earned a narrow 3-2 victory at Peterborough Milton in the fourth round of the national Mail on Sunday competition.

It was an extremely close match, with all games finishing on the 17th or 18th greens.

Leading the team out was Lois Williamson (handicap 6) against a five-handicapper from the home side. Despite being three down at the turn and still two down with five to play, she went on to get the first vital point on the 18th green (1up).

In game two, Angela Roper (13) was giving three shots. She narrowly lost by 2&1.

Elizabeth Holbrook (14) was playing an eight handicapper and won 2&1 to put Spalding back ahead.

Anita Cross (18) received four shots, but was forced to hold her nerve having been one down with two holes to play. She won the last two holes to win 1up.

Pat West (5) had to give her opponent eight shots. She lost one down, having been four down at one stage.

  • Despite some dreadful weather – with hail, snow and heavy rain all falling – Tracy Siddle returned a fantastic +4 score to win Spalding Golf Club’s prestigious Temple Kingston competition.

It earned her a reduction in handicap from 20 to 18.

Second place went to Deborah Ellis with an all square score, while third place went to Chris Leggett, beating Angela Roper and Jacquie Clare on countback. All recording -1 scores.

  • Spalding Golf Club’s ladies saw their recent match against Gedney Hill played over just 13 holes due to poor weather.

The scoreline was 2-2 at that point. Playing for Spalding were Paula Brown and Mary Gould, (2 down), Mags Filby and Jenny Pipe (3up), Wendy Revill and Elaine Harriuson (5up) and Carole

Holland and Rowena Hughes (2 down).
