Spalding Golf Club hoping for successful year as Rafferty takes the helm

New Spalding Golf Club captain Andy Rafferty was supported by 120 members at his Captain’s Drive In event last weekend.

The event was played out over 16 holes at the Surfleet course – with two out of action – and was won by Graham Hutchings (12 handicap) with a score of 35 Stableford points.

Completing the top three were Kenneth Murray (21) on 34 points and Wayne Wallace (5) one point further back. Wallace pipped Paddy Goslyn (15) and Thomas Hull (1) on countback after both also scored 33 points.

A Spalding GC spokesman said: “We would like to wish Andy all the best for the coming year and hope to make it successful together.”

  • Andy Cunnington was crowned Champion of Champions at Spalding after winning the Gold Medal – which serves as the club’s season finale.

Played over 16 holes, Cunnington (15 handicap) shot a 72 to take the top prize on countback from Andrew Atkins (6).

Calum Lewis (3) was two shots back in third with a score of 74.

  • Some 36 members of Spalding Golf Club took part in a 11-hole Florida Scramble last Tuesday, with the fixture played in perfect half-term weather.

Each team was made up by a junior, a lady, a senior and a man – bringing together all sections the club.

For many of the juniors, this was their first official fixture. Indeed, it was a first for all the players enjoying the opportunity to take part in the fun format and get to know different members.

The seniors’ section provided a light snack after the round, which was well received by everyone involved, too.

Juniors’ past captain Tommy Hull, supported by the new junior skipper Tilly Garfoot, also expertly managed the scorecards and the presentation of prizes to the winning teams.

First place at the Surfleet course went to the team of Andy Cunnington, Graham Rudkin, Chris Vickers and Ollie Cunnington with a score of 33.7.

Behind them, second spot went to Peter Bridge, Luke Chilvers, Beryl Clay and Ethan Chilvers with a strong total of 34.1.

Tydd St Giles Golf Club

This year’s Tydd St Giles Golf Club Lodge Owners Trophy attracted more than 40 players and also raised a healthy amount for charity.

The annual competition is held in aid of the Butterfly Hospice Charity – which provides palliative and end of life care to anyone over the age of 18 with progressive and/or life-limiting illnesses living in the east of Lincolnshire.

Organisers of the competition, Christine Montague and Derek Wroe, were very pleased to present Sue Watsham – who is head of income generation for the charity – a cheque for £315 on the day.
