With the winter weather not very conducive to outdoor action, a host of Spalding Cycling Club members got together to take on a different kind of challenge.
For around the last eight years, a number of Spalding riders have been getting together every Tuesday night in a member’s garage to ride on static trainers during the winter months.
They use the The Sufferfest App, which differs from most of the others in that it instead of the utilising avatars as cyclists on the screen it features recorded footage of Gran Tour such as The Giro, Tour de France, and La Vuelta.
This gives the rider the chance to enjoy the wonderful scenery – while suffering in the process.
The Tour of Sufferlandia takes place every year in February and involves a series of video workouts for nine continuous days, varying from sprinting, endurance, climbing and combinations of both.
That’s a total of around 14 hours riding and, for the stronger riders, milages of around 180-200.
Gary Bentley, Chris Bettinson, Neil Palmer, Barry Drew, Andrew Gurney and Sarah Bentley all started the event, with all but Palmer and Bettinson (who were excused due to taking part in a Macmillan charity walk/run on Sunday) successfully completing it.
