A close-knit community in Spalding still reeling from the murders of a mum and daughter has created a memorial to the pair.
Residents, friends and even people who did not know Liz (49) and Katie Edwards (13) chipped in for a pair of brass plaques and wall-mounted vases to remember the pair who were killed at their Dawson Avenue home in April.
Friends of the family Sheena Thorpe and Sue Copland carried out a house-to-house collection on the Royce Road estate over a number of weeks. And donations were collected in Late Shopper in nearby Holbeach Road.
The memorial in Royce Road was unveiled on Monday (June 27) by Liz’s partner Graham Green, who had been invited to come from his home in the West Midlands.
He said: “I’m really pleased with it and just want to thank everyone involved.”
Sheena, who used to live on the estate, said the inspiration for starting the collection was a desire to do something positive after such an awful occurrence.
“I think it’s still a shock to people,” she said.
A boy and girl – both aged 14 at the time of the offences – have jointly been charged with the murders and are on remand awaiting their next court appearance.
Sheena added: “We were a little bit peeved with comments made that people should look after their kids.
“Everybody on the estate wanted something done to remember Liz and Katie so we decided to get off our backsides and do this.
“People were grateful and we’d just like to thank everybody who donated.”
The Rev Mike Chesher, of St Paul’s Church, said prayers at Monday’s dedication and balloons in school dinner lady Liz’s favourite colour, purple, were released.
