South Holland Explorers and scouts take to water in Spalding for clean-up of River Welland

The Spalding town centre stretch of the River Welland is a lot cleaner after a litter-pick on Saturday.

In a joint venture between South Holland Explorers and Scouts and South Holland District Council, 14 bags of rubbish were collected during a chilly two-hour stint on Saturday morning.

Youngsters took to the water in canoes to assist in the community project, which covered about 200m each side of High Bridge.

District commissioner Andy Cowper-Johnson said: “This is what we do. We don’t just tie knots and go camping!”

And a boat was relaunched at the end of the session to rescue a handbag which a lady had dropped in the water!
