Snowden Field plays host to national grasstrack event

The Spalding Cycling Club Grass Track event in Crowland this year included the British Cycling Women’s 400m National Championship.

Grass track cycling is raced on a fixed wheel bike and is all about speed, stamina, technique, tactics and nerve.
Riders of all ages from across the nation descended on Snowden Field to race around the 264-metre track, with race distances varying between 264m and 8km (30 times round the track).
Former Spalding CC rider Tilly Gurney, now riding for University of Nottingham CC, won gold in the 400m event, ahead of Abigail Coles, Ella Friedlander, Sherilyn Powell and Amy Cook.
Spalding youth rider Jacob Booth was second in his age group omnium.
Dominic Righini-Brand, a regular winner at the club time trials, tried grass track and, while learning new techniques, finished sixth in three of five events, out of a field of more than 15 seniors.
Organiser George Bellars said: “The event would not have gone ahead without a team of volunteers supporting me, so thank you to them but also a big thank you to our sponsors and supporters.”
A refreshment stall at the event raised more than £350 for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
Sponsors were FJ’s Barbers, Turnbull, Alan Boswell Group, Glenside Nurseries, Field for Paws, Intercounty Truck & Van, Blakemore Foundation, Specialized Distribution (Spalding), A & F Gurney, Polchi International and J&SC Quality Branded Foods with support from Paceys Bakery, W Hargrave & Son, Grace Foods UK and Chisletts Hire.

lWith the ten-mile time trials finished for the season, attention turned to the five-mile time trials that will close the season.
It meant races over one lap of the Pode Hole course rather than the usual two laps.
Veteran Frazer Wallis took home victory, finally overhauling Dominic Righini-Brand by 15 seconds with a blistering time of 10 minutes 46 seconds, with Chris Ward third, a further 21 seconds back.
Fourth place was inseparable between juniors Jacob Booth and William Horspool who clocked 11:41.
Matt Chappell reigned supreme in the road bike category, just behind the two young guns with 11:55.
Evegeniya Righini-Brand continued her domination of the women’s field with 12:52, leading home Samantha Briffett and Louise Southgate.
Next week sees the final time trial of the season to decide the five-mile crown.
